Misery is manifold. The wretchedness of earth is multiform. Overreaching the wide horizon as the rainbow, its hues are as various as the hues of that arch, --as distinct too, yet as intimately blended. Overreaching the wide horizon as the rainbow! How is it that from beauty I have derived a type of unloveliness? --from the covenant of peace a simile of sorrow? But as, in ethics, evil is a consequence of good, so, in fact, out of joy is sorrow born. Either the memory of past bliss is the anguish of to-day, or the agonies which are have their origin in the ecstasies which might have been.

From "Berenice", by Edgar Allan Poe.

hey siddhu whaddup man? stumbled on to your blog via khadiya's and baliga's. i noticed you've been reading a corner of a foreign field.. howdya like it so far? maybe you should also pick up picador book of cricket and beyond a boundry( if you havent already)..they're as good if not better than foreign field...my fav part in the book is description of nayudu's century against MCC..i think he hit 10-12 sixes..fascinating... santosh gowda

p.s - love the juxtapositioning of gilly's and thurman's pic..sooper

Hey Santosh,

While Foreign field is a fascinating account of how cricket grew in India, it has a little too less "cricket" for my liking. Prefer Guha's "States of Indian cricket". (except for the overdose of praise for Vishy and the desperate attempts to portray Sunny as the greatest post-war bastamn)

yeah "states of indian cricket" is a joyous more relaxed read..i love guha's knack of coming up with anecdotes...wrt his vishy, sunny fixationm i think you'll get that from most people who followed cricket in the 70's like bhogle and kesavan..talking abt kesavan, his "men in white" is out..read somewhere that its a must have..

i am waiting for favourite extracts -2 :)
